What, you ask, might a 'Ruins Bar' be? Quoting from the interwebs:
Ruin bars are all the rage in Budapest and have been around since the founding of Szimpla Kert in 2001, the mecca of all ruin bars. These bars are built in Budapest's old District VII neighborhood (the old Jewish quarter) in the ruins of abandoned buildings, stores, or lots. ... From outside, these bars look like normal homes.
All the ruins bars have a common theme. They're not meant to be pretty, or stuffy, or 5-star. They don't alter the beat-up-ness of the building and sometimes even encourage it to be beat up more (ie; via graffiti). They don't put a fresh coat of paint on it. They simply add to whatever is there. Adding can be just junk, art, old mis-matched furniture, a fender from a 32 Ford, antiques, retro-60's, stringed lights, toilets, and maybe some duck decoys thrown in. You get the idea, right?
Of course, I had to check it out. I chose to go during the day when it wouldn't be so busy versus the evenings when they're packed with millenials and this old fart probably wouldn't be let in.
This is Szimpla Kert...the bar that started it all.
Yes, you can enjoy your drink and/or meal in a bathtub!!
Why not?
Even the Travelocity gnome hangs out here!
Notice the misters that help keep the outdoor (but indoors) patio cool on hot days.
Hanging overhead. But, where's the rest of the piano?
I had a delicious chicken burger, fries, and beer here.
Mannequins (with cassete tape heads) are always recyclable!!
Loved the concept and experience.
Wonder how they dust it?
Would something like this be allowed in the US of A? Hell no!
The one thing sorely missing here was a wall of chewing gum!!
Next up...RnR in the Park...!!
and
Headin Home
